Saint-Petersburg was built in 1703 by Peter the Great, who himself helped with the construction. Peter I invited the most famous engineers and architects of Europe. Saint-Petersburg "His town" was the capital of the Russian Empire and one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
It has attracted the visitors for many years, songs and poems have been dedicated to its magnificence. The city was expected to be a gateway for the trade with the West, and therefore not a so- called Russian town at all. Saint-Petersburg was created under western influence and even the Kremlin as a fortress was missing, that was unusual for a city in the Russian Empire. Instead of it the Peter-and-Paul Fortress was built for protection of the lands from enemies. All Russian Emperors and their families are buried in the impressing St.Peter & Paul Cathedral. Uncountable architectural highlights are waiting for you at your sightseeing tour: the Winter Palace of the royal family, which accommodates today the Hermitage, one of the largest and most beautiful museums in the world. You will have a through knowledge of the complicated Russian history and you shall want to return here again.
Saint-Petersburg has always been open to visitors, especially from Finland and other Scandinavian countries, Germany and the United States. The touristic infra-structure of St.-Petersburg is excellent compared with Russian standards and complete with other European cities.
