A picturesque place, situated on the banks of the Volga. The town was founded in 1410 by Vassily I as a border post of the Kingdom of Moscow. Plyos is a small yet distinctive town which has retained and best reveals the genuine beauty of the Russian soul. Here one can visit the Assumption Cathedral (end 17th century - beginning 18th century), and the Church of St Peter and Paul. Also in Plyos are several monuments to residents, one of these being the Levitan Museum, house of the famous Russian landscape artist Isaak Levitan who lived here from 1888 - 90.
