The city was founded in 1152 by Yuri Dolgoruki. The most important sight of the city is Georgy's Cathedral, built in the 13th century. The cathedral displays intricate white-stone carving, statues set high up and set off by the smooth walls which are covered with fine ornamental carpets. As well, you can visit the Monastery and Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, founded in the 13th century, Nadvratnuyu Bogoslovskuyu Church, and Kelarskuyu Chamber.
